What Are Your Options for Breast Implants?

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States. Many women want to enhance the size and/or shape of their breasts, but no two women have the same cosmetic goals. When you are considering breast implants, factors like the material used and size of the implant can be customized to give you the perfect breast implants.

Types of Breast Implants

Material

Material is one of the main things to consider when receiving breast implants – you can either receive silicone implants or saline implants. Some patients prefer silicone implants because they have a more natural feel, but others may prefer saline material because it can be safely absorbed by the body if a rupture or leak occurs. Women with silicone implants should receive an MRI scan every couple years to prevent this possible complication.

Size

Breast implants come in a wide variety of sizes, so it is easy to customize how large of an enhancement you want. Your doctor may make recommendations for the size of your implants since too large of implants can be dangerous or look unnatural, especially on women with petite body types.

Breast Implant Recovery

Recovery time after a breast augmentation with implants does not vary based on the type of implants you receive. Most patients fully recover within 4-6 weeks but after one week, most of the swelling and bruising will have significantly improved. The main factor that can affect healing and recovery time is whether your implants are placed above or below the chest muscles. Both techniques have their pros and cons, and your doctor can also discuss this with you at your consultation.
