Septoplasty

What is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a procedure designed to correct a deviated septum and allow for improved breathing. A deviated septum occurs when the cartilage dividing the space between your nostrils (septum) is crooked, making it harder to breathe through the nose and increasing the risk of sinus infections. The septum can become crooked naturally as an individual grows or through injury. If you are searching for a septoplasty surgeon near you or considering septoplasty in Scottsdale, our expert team is here to help. Understanding the benefits of this procedure, including the impact on nose shape and overall health, can guide you in making an informed decision.

Candidates for Septoplasty

Individuals who have been diagnosed with a deviated septum and are looking to improve breathing through the nose can benefit from a septoplasty procedure. Ideal candidates will be physically healthy and have a nose that is finished growing (typically around 16 years for girls and 17-18 years for boys). If you meet these criteria and are interested in learning more about candidacy for septoplasty, please schedule a consultation appointment at our Scottsdale office today. Our expert septoplasty surgeons are here to determine if this procedure is right for you and to guide you through the process for optimal results.

The Procedure

Septoplasty can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia and is done on an outpatient basis. A doctor at North Valley Cosmetic Surgery will cut a wall on one side of the nose and lift or remove the membrane that covers the septum. This allows access to the inside of the nose to reshape the bone and cartilage. Sometimes, parts of cartilage and bone are removed and then reshaped and repositioned. The mucosa will then be placed back over the septum and the incision closed with absorbable sutures. This entire procedure takes about 30-90 minutes to complete.

It is important to understand that septoplasty itself does not change the shape of the nose. However, it can be combined with rhinoplasty to correct a deviated septum and improve the appearance of the nose.

Recovery

Following septoplasty, your doctor may place splints or soft packing into your nose to hold nasal tissue in place and prevent the formation of scar tissue. Swelling and discomfort may occur, though over-the-counter (OTC) or prescribed medication can help with symptoms. You may be given instructions to use saline sprays to clear nasal congestion. When sleeping, be sure to keep your head propped up to reduce swelling. You should also avoid strenuous activities and exercise for up to five weeks to avoid nosebleeds. We will share post-op instructions with you to ensure that you heal properly for optimal results.
