Facelift

What is a Facelift?

As we age, our skin loses collagen and elastin, resulting in excess sagging skin and deep folds, making us look older than we feel. A facelift is a cosmetic procedure to improve visible signs of aging on the face and neck. The main goal of this procedure is to achieve a younger-looking you.

Candidates for Facelift

Healthy adults who are bothered by lax facial tissue, deep wrinkles, loose skin on the neck, or jowls on the lower face can often benefit from a facelift. Ideal candidates will be nonsmokers with a positive outlook on their results. However, it is important to understand that a facelift cannot change your overall appearance, nor can it stop the aging process. Please contact our office to schedule a consultation appointment for more information regarding candidacy.

The Procedure

Facelift surgery will be individualized to your unique cosmetic needs. There are two main types of facelifts performed today including:

Traditional Facelift

A traditional facelift fully addresses signs of aging on the mid-face and neck. Incisions are located just behind the hairline, beginning near the temples and continuing around the front of the ear. The surgeon will reposition tissues beneath the skin and remove excess lax skin to eliminate creases and smooth the skin for a more youthful appearance.

Limited Incision Facelift

A limited incision facelift, also called a mini facelift, is a good option for those with a milder degree of sagging skin. This technique is less invasive than a traditional facelift, and incisions are shorter.

In general, facelift surgery is performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. After making the necessary incisions, your surgeon will reposition facial tissues, eliminate excess skin, and redrape the remaining skin. This will result in a smoother, more youthful facial contour.

Recovery

Following a facelift, bandages may be placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising. Drains may also be placed to collect any excess fluids during recovery. Most patients can return to gentle normal activities about two weeks after surgery, and exercise after four weeks. During healing, it is especially important to protect your face from the sun. Be sure to wear sunscreen when outdoors, as well as a wide-brimmed hat if possible. Our team will provide you with specific aftercare instructions to ensure you achieve the best possible results.
