Hair Transplant

What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that moves some of your existing hair to areas that have thinning or no hair. The hair is usually moved from the back or side of the head to the top or front of the head for evenly distributed and thicker hair.

The majority of hair loss in men and women is caused by pattern baldness but may also be due to other factors such as stress, illness, diet, hormonal imbalance, and certain medications.

Candidates for a Hair Transplant

Men and women who are suffering from pattern baldness, have thinning hair, or have lost hair from a scalp or burn injury can often benefit from hair transplant surgery. However, certain individuals may not be good candidates, including those who don’t have enough donor hair sites for the transplant process, those with a history of keloid scarring, women with widespread pattern or hair loss throughout the scalp, or those who have lost hair due to medications like chemotherapy. Please contact our office today to schedule a consultation appointment to learn if this treatment is right for you.

The Procedure

There are two main hair transplant techniques including follicular unit transplantation (FUT), and follicular unit extraction (FUE). Some patients need a series of sessions to achieve the results they desire.

FUT Transplant

During this procedure, your surgeon will cut a strip of skin from the back of the head. This area is then closed with stitches. Next, the removed strip of skin will be cut into small sections and implanted into the treatment areas. This will help to achieve natural-looking hair growth

FUE Transplant

During this technique, your surgeon will create small holes with a needle or blade in the area of the scalp that is receiving the hair transplant. Hairs are then gently placed into these holes. Hundreds or thousands of hairs may be transplanted during one treatment session.

Recovery

Following your hair transplant procedure, you may have a sore scalp and swelling. Pain medication, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to ensure you heal properly. Most people can return to work several days following surgery. The transplanted hair will fall out after 2-3 weeks to make room for new hair growth. Most patients can see the majority of their new hair growth after 6-9 months.
