Breast Implant Removal

What is Breast Implant Removal?

The main goal of breast implant removal is to remove breast implants from previous breast augmentation or breast reconstruction. During this procedure, the surgeon may also remove a breast capsule or silicone material from implant leaks. It is important to understand that breast implants are not lifelong devices, and should be exchanged or removed every 10-15 years.

Candidates for Breast Implant Removal

If you no longer desire breast implants, have capsular contracture, pain with implants, or an implant leak, you may be a good candidate for this procedure. Ideal candidates will be physically healthy, at a stable weight, nonsmokers, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure. Please contact our office today to schedule your consultation appointment to learn if this procedure is right for you.

The Procedure

Breast implant removal can be performed using IV sedation and general anesthesia. During this procedure, an incision will be created along the inframammary fold or around the areola. There are a number of techniques that are used to remove breast capsules and/or implants, which will depend on your surgeon’s preference. Once the breast implants are removed, incisions will be closed with sutures and/or skin adhesives.

Recovery

Following your breast implant removal, you will have dressings and/or bandages will be placed onto the incisions and drains may also be placed to collect excess fluid. You may also need to wear a surgical bra to reduce swelling during recovery. Our team will provide you with instructions regarding how to care for your surgical sites, how to properly take any prescribed medications, and when to follow up with your surgeon. Please do not hesitate to contact our office with any recovery questions or concerns that you may have.

It is important to understand that you may experience a different breast profile than before. Your chest may appear flatter or droopier than before surgery. Because of this, many women may choose to undergo a breast lift following this procedure to lift the breasts to a perkier, more youthful position and even out the breast contours.
